I began my training in JEET KUNE DO under the guidance of Sifu EMMANUEL PIUS CHACHA. He was my university mate who introduced me to the art and philosophy of BRUCE LEE.
After many years of hard training and sacrifice, I became a Second Generation Student, personally trained and certified by two of BRUCE LEE´s original students: Sifu JERRY POTEET and Grand Master RICHARD S BUSTILLO. I also was personally trained and certified as instructor in the Golden Dragon Self Defense System by Grand Master SEBASTIAN NAZARIO. Here are my qualifications:

In my search for the truth in combat, I got the chance to train and learn from people from the three Bruce Lee schools.
From the Seattle school:
- Taky Kimura / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Jesse Glover / Seattle, WA. 2008
From the Oakland school:
- Gary Cagaanan / Seattle, WA. 2008
- Mario Magdangal / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Greglon Lee (Son of James Yimm Lee) / Seattle, WA. 2008
From the Los Angeles school:
- Jerry Poteet / Los Angeles, CA 2005
- Richard Bustillo / Seattle, WA. 2008
- Dan Inosanto / Torrance, CA. 2009
I have also participated in training sessions with the following most remarkable Second Generation Jeet Kune Do students:
- Tim Tackett / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Octavio Quintero / Los Angeles, CA. 2007; Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Yori Nakamura / Seattle, WA. 2008
- Thommy Carruthers / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Andy Kimura (Hijo de Taky Kimura) / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
- Greg Smith / Seattle, WA. 2008; Universal City, CA. 2009
Since Jeet Kune Do implies constant evolution, with the advice of my Sigung Grand Master Richard Bustillo, I decided to follow the path of Bruce Lee, namely to learn from different sources and absorb what is useful… Here there are some of my sources:
- Cacoy Cañete: Cacoy Doce Pares Eskrido / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Kai Uwe Jettkandt: Shaoling Gung Fu & Chi Kung Fu / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Gokor Chivichiyan: Sombo & Wrestling / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Kelly Worden: Edge Weapon / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Fernando Vasconcelos: Brazilian Jiujitsu / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Uwe Claussen: Traditional Jiujitsu & Judo / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Fernando Rodriguez: Savate & Muay Thai / Torrance, CA. 2009
- Vincent Osorio: Shooting / Torrance, CA. 2009
JEET KUNE DO emphasizes that the individual is more important than any established system or style; for this reason I just represent my own name and the names of my masters, just as they represent their own names and the name of BRUCE LEE.

He is also a former lecturer at Los Angeles County University and is certified as a law enforcement defensive tactics instructor by the FBI, the Los Angeles County Sheriff´s Department, and the Los Angeles Police Department, where he serves as a consultant to the LAPD Civilian Martial Arts Advisory Panel.
Beginning with his training in judo (at age ten) and boxing (age twelve) in his native Hawaii. GM Bustillo´s martial arts experience spans nearly half a century. After competing in junior boxing organizations during the early years, he practiced the Kajukenbo system from age fourteen until his graduation from St. Louis High School, at which time he moved to California to pursue a college education. While a college student at age nineteen, GM Bustillo competed in golden Gloves and amateur boxing tournaments for Shaw´s Boxing Gym in L.A.´s Chinatown. Aged twenty-four, he began studying Jeet Kune Do under Bruce Lee at the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in L.A.´s Chinatown. In 1967, along with training partner Dan Inosanto, GM Bustillo began to research and study the Filipino martial arts of kali/escrima/arnis. As a result, he and Inosanto have been credited worldwide for reviving and promoting the martial arts of the Philippines. In 1974, the two co-founded the Filipino Kali Academy in Torrance, California, in order to share their experience of Bruce Lee´s Jeet Kune Do with others and to preserve and advance the Filipino martial arts, in addition to being recognised as one of the world´s leading authorities on Bruce Lee´s Jeet Kune Do.
GM Bustillo´s martial arts resume includes a broad array of instructor credentials. In 1978, he began studying Muay Thai kickboxing and was awarded the title of Kru (instructor) in 1985 from former Olympian and Muay Thai champion Nanfa “Chiridichoi” Satenglam. He is also a certified USA Olympic Training Center coach and official for the U.S. Amateur Boxing of Southern California, a Guro (instructor) in kali/escrima/arnis, and 10th degree black belt (Grandmaster) under the famed Cacoy Doce Pares Organization of Cebu City, Philippines. In 1986, after managing the personnel department of a major Los Angeles airline for three years (as the culmination of a twenty-year career), GM Bustillo opted for early retirement in order to dedicate himself full-time to the martial arts. His ultimate goal is to contribute not only to the martial arts, but to society in general, by helping to instill a sense of confidence and well-being in the lives of everyone he teaches.
Other notable points in GM Bustillo´s career include his tenure as a former columnist for Martial Arts Training, and serving as President of the World Eskrima/Kali/Arnis Federation (WEKAF) from 1994-96. As an Adjunct to his rigorous schedule of teaching at the IMB, coaching and officiating boxing and kickboxing, and conducting martial arts seminars across the country and abroad, GM Bustillo serves his community in a number of auxiliary capacities. The majority of his time with the Los Angeles County Sheriff´s Department is spent teaching defensive tactics and assisting the Advanced Training Bureau and the Force Instructor Unit. GM Bustillo is a member of the Council of Grandmasters of Cebu, Philippines, the California Association of Force Instructors and the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers.
JERRY POTEET
 |
Branded by Inside Kung Fu magazine editor, “the greatest Jeet Kune Do instructor in the world,” original Bruce Lee student Jerry Poteet is known by many as “the conscience of Jeet Kune Do.”
Since his teacher’s premature passing, Jerry has stood firm, refusing to water down the art that had such an enormous impact in his life. In fact, Jerry credits his teacher, Bruce Lee, with giving him the tools to survive, “the fight of my life”, when he was compelled to undergo a liver transplant in 1995. Today, Jerry teaches Jeet Kune Do to the next generation of students and Instructors, who will keep the flame alive. |
|
Sifu Poteet has been teaching martial arts for over 40 years. Like many young men in the ’60s, Jerry began his martial arts career in Kenpo, and became a black belt under renowned Kenpo Instructor Ed Parker.
Contrary to popular misconception, Jerry did not meet his famous Jeet Kune Do teacher in Los Angeles, but in Oakland, at James Lee’s house. Later that year, he was fortunate enough to be chosen as the second student admitted to Bruce Lee’s Chinatown School in LA. He was also selected to be in a “closed door” group of five students, who trained with Bruce Lee twice a week.
In the years since, Jerry has used his martial arts expertise to train the Dallas Cowboys football team, executive bodyguards of Hollywood celebrities, and choreograph the fight scenes of several motion pictures.
But his proudest achievement is the fact that he was chosen as the person best able to train the actor who would portray his teacher, Bruce Lee. Over the years, Jerry has refined a teaching method that, like the art of Jeet Kune Do itself, strips away the inessentials. It was this method he used to train actor Jason Scott Lee for the role in DRAGON, THE BRUCE LEE STORY. For Sifu Poteet, it was the ultimate way “to give something back to my teacher.”
Whether teaching an individual or a group, Sifu Poteet is easy-going, yet intense, truly embodying the principle of Yin/Yang, or opposites co-existing harmoniously. He is friendly and casual in manner, yet he demands precision in movement and attitude. Laughing and joking, yet all business when it comes to the training results. He wishes to elicit from students only what his teacher demanded from him: their best. It is amazing to see how many surpass not only his expectations, but their own as well.
This is why Jerry Poteet is proclaimed as “The Source” for the truth in the art of Jeet Kune Do.
SEBASTIAN NAZARIO
 |
Golden Dragon - Jeet Kune Do founder Grand Master Sebastian Nazario, began his training at the age of 8, when his dad took him to the local gym to learn boxing and wrestling. For many years he enjoyed the rough and tumble of amateur bouts before giving up these sports in favor of the martial arts. In his 45 years of practicing martial arts, Grand Master Sebastian has trained all over the world with many high ranking masters, earning numerous instructor-level black belts. He is trained in Shotokan Karate, Taekwondo, American Kenpo Karate, Aikido, Filipino Arnis, Escrima, Kali, Muay Thai, Wushu, Judo, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Military Hand-To-Hand Combat, |
|
Wing Chun, Hapkido, Ninjitsu, Pentjak Silat, Hising I Chuan, Ba Gua Zhang, Tai Chi Chuan, MMA and Jeet Kune Do.
In his 45 years of martial arts practice, Grand Master Sebastian Nazario also researched every reality-based self-defense system available, but was dissatisfied with them all.
Most contemporary martial arts styles are sports-oriented rather than reality-based. It is not uncommon for students to study martial arts for years, and still not be able to call upon and apply their arts to real situations. The way you train is the way you will fight. In reality, the response to an attack must be simple, direct and practical. All unnecessary stances and forms must be abandoned. Grand Master Sebastian Nazario has applied his broad knowledge and experiences of martial arts, to devise a completely new modern scientific street-fighting system that will enable people of all ages, shapes and sizes to defend themselves in an actual violent street confrontation.
Grand Master Sebastian Nazario was inducted into the U.S.A. Martial Arts Hall of Fame 2009
Original System Founder of the Year - Grand Master
